The work emerged from a need to reflect on the growing social inequality in Peru and the symbolic and material consequences of spatial division. After arriving in Berlin during a time of political crisis and social unrest in Peru, the question arose of how to translate this research into a new context. The historical weight of the Berlin Wall, and its emotional and political echoes, opened a space to draw connections between Lima and Berlin—between different but resonant experiences of control, exclusion, and resistance.
The installation is a work in progress. It brings together visual research, archival material, and fragments of a personal correspondence with 82-year-old artist Renate Marnitz, who shared her experiences of the Berlin Wall from the perspective of life in East Germany. These documents, along with collective reflections, aim to open questions around the potential destruction of Lima’s Wall of Shame: What would happen after its removal? What forms of integration could emerge? What does this word “integration” really mean? Do we all agree with the destruction of walls? What role can art play in that process?
In collaboration with artists from Neue Kunst Initiative e.V. in Marzahn, Berlin, the project becomes a platform for shared reflection on separation, identity, and the right to access and transform the public space.
